How to pronounce Daiya
For years I have heard people all over the place pronounce the company called Daiya as "Die-ya" while I always pronounce it as "day-a". So which pronunciation is correct? I set out to find the answer to the question!
How do you pronounce Diaya?
According to the frequently asked questions on the Diaya company website:
We pronounce Daiya as “day-ah.” As in “Have a nice Daiya!” The name came from a play on the words ‘dairy’ and “Dayaa,” which is Sanskrit for “loving, kindness and compassion.”
So there you have it! According to the company, Daiya is pronounced the way I have always been saying it. It's "day-ah."
Don't feel bad if you have been pronouncing it incorrectly for years. My favorite shoe company is Teva. I had wore their shoes for a decade, pronouncing the name as "Tee-va" with a long "e" sound. Then I needed to call there one day about a pair of shoes I had bought. They answered the phone saying "Teh-va" with a short "e" sound. I asked them to repeat how they say it, and I explained that for a decade I had been incorrectly pronouncing their company name with a long "e" sound. By the way, Teva is Sanskrit for nature, and they are still my favorite shoe company (for about 20 years now).
Plus, the majority of Americans incorrectly pronounce Adidas. This was brought to my attention a couple of years ago when we had a foreign exchange student stay with us from Spain. We immediately changed how we pronounce it so that we are saying it correctly. Yet everyone else around us still says it incorrectly, so it appears to them that we are the ones that don't know how to pronounce it. It is not pronounced "Ah-DEE-dus" as the majority of Americans pronounce it. The correct way to pronounce Adidas is "AH-dee-dahs"... if you are still confused read this and watch the video.
