A vegan or vegetarian Halloween? You bet!
If you are raising a vegan or vegetarian child you may wonder what you should do when it comes to trick or treating. Let's be honest here, a lot of the candy that is handed out on Halloween is not vegan and a lot is not even vegetarian. So does that mean you should not allow your child to trick or treat? I say no, it doesn't mean that at all!
My kids are now 12 and 14 and I've always let them trick or treat for Halloween. While there is a lot of candy that isn't vegetarian or vegan, there is a lot that is, too! We always go trick or treating as normal and then take the bag home and dump it out on the floor. We go through it and pull out all of the pieces that we don't want. Then we put those into our bowl that will be given out to people with the next ring of the door bell. Problem solved! We just hand it right back out to the next kids that come along. There's no reason to throw it in the trash, would be wasteful. We just give it back out.
Even after pulling out all of the candy we don't want my kids are always left with a lot of candy they can have. And I mean a lot! There are plenty of good things they can have left over, such as Smarties, licorice, lollipops, hard candies, and more.
There is no reason to make your kids skip out on the fun of Halloween because they are vegetarian or vegan. Just work around it! And if you will be involved in a Halloween party, be sure that you take something that your kids can have. It's never been a problem in our house and it shouldn't be in yours either. Vegans and vegetarians can have a fun and sweet Halloween, too!
Some ingredients that are not vegetarian and vegan that you may find in candy at Halloween include gelatin, dairy, milk, cochineal, confectioner's glaze, carmine, etc. And no, candy corn is not vegetarian.
