The Vegetarian Hall of Fame

Until this week I was not even aware there was a "Vegetarian Hall of Fame." When I first heard it I HallOfFame1
thought it even sounded odd, about as odd an "Omnivore Hall of Fame" would be. But then I read more and was pleased at what I learned.

The Vegetarian Hall of Fame has inducted people into it that have made significant contributions to helping the advancement of vegetarianism. Thus far such people inducted have been Howard Lyman, Richard Schwartz, PhD (author and president of Jewish Vegetarians of North America), T. Colin Campbell, PhD, Caldwell Esselstyn, MD (authored a book former president Bill Clinton read prior to going vegan and also featured in Forks Over Knives), Joe Connelly & Colleen Holland (VegNews), James LaVeck and Jenny Stein (award winning film producers and founders of Tribe of Heart), Neal Barnard, MD (a prolific author and founder and president of Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine).

Impressive list of people, right? They have done wonderful things to advance vegetariansim. And the latest person to be inducted is Rae Sikora. Even if you are not familiar with her name there is a good chance you may be familiar with some of the (many) things she has done to help advance vegetarianism. These things include:

  • Co-created, the first of it's kind, The Institute for Humane Education in Blue Hill, Maine
  • Started the first certification program for humane education
  • Started the first Masters program in Humane Education through Cambridge College (now with the University of Valparaiso).
  • Authored and soon to be published, Sharing Home, lesson plans on humane education
  • Co-authored Plant Peace Daily: Everyday Outreach for People Who Care, an activism book
  • Co-authored Sowing Seeds Workbook: A Humane Education Primer
  • Co-founded Plant Peace Daily, an organizational activism platform
  • Co-founded VegFund, an organization funding vegan outreach around the world with a current annual budget of over 1.4 million dollars
  • Serves on the advisory board of the internationally-acclaimed VegNews Magazine

I have her Plant Peace Daily book and it has a lot of good information in it. I'm also so thankful for VegFund. I think it's an awesome resource in helping to promote veganism. Through it many people have learned about veganism that otherwise may not have. Great organization!

Congratulations to Rae Sikora for being inducted into the Vegetarian Hall of Fame this year. You can learn more about her here
