Quick Chickpea Curry from "The Indian Vegan Kitchen"

Today I made quick chickpea curry, my third recipe attempt, from the book "The Indian Vegan Kitchen." The two other dishes I made were not impressive. So I had high hopes that this one was going to turn out great!
I even enlisted the assitance of my Indian friend, who perused the recipe and made sure I had all the necessary spices (I couldn't find some at my local store, so she hooked me up). Everything was in place and ready to go!
The recipe was easy to follow and when I was finished the dish looked great! I served it along with white basmati rice. Then it was time to taste it...
I don't understand how a dish with that many different spices can come out tasting bland, but it did. The dish was just "okay" and probably not something even good enough to make again.
I really want to love this cookbook. I was so excited when I found it. But so far I'm 0 for 3 in recipes I've attempted. I love Indian food when I eat it at my friends house or in restaurants, but I'm starting to question whether or not I should just leave the preparation of it up to them. Maybe I'll try another couple of recipes and see what happens, but my enthusiasm is waning...
I love Indian and was thinking about getting this book. Thank you for reviewing it. Sounds like I should keep lookin'.

Jessica, I've read other reviews of this book that are good (although it's of the book, not actual dishes people have cooked). Check with your local library, they probably have it. You can check it out and try a few recipes before deciding if you should buy. And I'll let you in on a secret, I'll be giving a copy of the book away next month! :)
