One day we came across a show that had Mickey fishing. Of course, her being raised vegetarian, I wasn't happy. Besides, it seemed odd that Mickey Mouse would kill fish. He usually seems like such a friendly character. So I started reading the show descriptions and deleting the fish episode each time.
Today she has grown out of the show, but still loves other shows on the Disney Channel. There is a segment between some shows called Pass the Plate, where they offer information on healthy eating. It focuses on dining around the world. I have found some of the segment to be somewhat interesting at times.
This morning the Pass the Plate episode was about eating fish around the world (go to the Pass the Plate site, and click on "videos" on the left hand side and click on the upper right fish picture). It encouraged the kids to eat fish, much to my dismay.
Luckily it came on after the show my daughter was watching and she had just left the room to go get dressed. I wouldn't want her watching a segment on a channel she loves that is encouraging her to eat fish.
It also bothers me on another level, because Disney has made half a billion dollars off of fish characters like Nemo and Flounder (that children adore). It seems to me like they should show a little more respect for the species that has made Nemo a household name and them a lot of money (not to mention that many children have fish as pets at home).
The last thing we need is the Disney Channel dishing out dining advice. Especially if they are going to tout the health benefits of eating animals.
