As most of you may already know, I am raising two vegetarian kids. And if you are
also a parent that is also doing this, you know that we sometimes have the tendency to read more into things. Okay, over-analyze everything is a bit more like it.
Case in point: this week my daughter brought home a project that they made in school, one of several celebrating the Dr. Seuss birthday. One of the projects (pictured) included green eggs and ham and it said where each kid would eat theirs.
Of course as a vegetarian parent I saw it and gasped. You probably know the feeling I'm talking about. I immediately look at my daughter and say "What is this? This is where you'd eat green eggs and ham?" At this point I'm all worked up thinking they are brainwashing my kid into eating such things, when I've spent 5.5 years teaching her just the opposite.
Then she looks at me with a silly look on her face and says "Mom, it's just a project. It's not for real. I wouldn't really eat green eggs and ham." And she goes on about her business without giving it a second thought.
And you know what? She's right.
If the project was about where she would eat a shoe, car, or chair, I wouldn't care if she participated. After all, it's just a project.
She may be the one going to school and doing these projects (which waste a lot of paper mind you, but that's another tangent for me), but she is also schooling me.
Sometimes a project really is just a project and means nothing. We parents that are raising vegetarian kids really need step back and realize that at times. We have to pick our battle. It's a good thing she reminded me of that. I'd rather save my energy for the bigger issues.
...But don't think I didn't take a moment to remind her that ham is a pig's butt and that we never buy eggs... because I absolutely did!

LOL, you are funny! But you did hit the nail on the head with this piece. My kids tell me all the time I'm too serious.

Thanks! It was quite funny when it happened. I think we veg parents sometimes over-analyze everything. No, I know we do! Glad you liked it.
